Artistic self-organisation and networks of solidarity in times of crisis

Lecture: Political Pragmatism, Terminological Strategies, and Alternative Economies: The Shift in Self-Perception and Societal Role of Self-Organization in Art

‘Just do it’ – that was the credo of the first generation of self-organised art spaces. Despite their initially pragmatic orientation within the art world, they were able to develop lasting political clout, as today these initiatives are a substantial part of their respective art scenes. However, their recognition is marked by paradoxes that are intertwined with the successful establishment of the phenomenon: the financing logic of state funding is based on the independence once postulated by the actors, which excludes long term contractually agreed performance targets and at the same time results in the precarious existence of spaces and the people involved in them; in a similarly ambivalent way, the initiatives are currently part of a diverse art scene, while conceptually – off-space – they are defined as unestablished and sometimes even resistant.

The lecture will trace these shifts, taking into account the cultural-political conditions, and discuss different models of self-positioning and support.

Das Kolloquium Artistic self-organisation and networks of solidarity in times of crisis setzt sich mit der Bedeutung von künstlerischer Selbstorganisation und Netzwerken der Solidarität in Zeiten multipler Krisen auseinander. Besonderes Interesse gilt der Situation von Künstler_innen, die im Exil leben und die u. a. aus der Ukraine, Belarus und Afghanistan geflohen sind.

In zahlreichen Ländern und Weltregionen ist die Kunstfreiheit stark bedroht und viele Künstler_innen sehen sich aufgrund von Krieg, politischer Verfolgung, Wirtschaftskrisen und anderen Gründen gezwungen, Zuflucht in einem anderen Land zu suchen. Dieses Kolloquium bringt Personen aus den Praxisbereichen Kunst, Bildung, Forschung, Kulturpolitik und Zivilgesellschaft zusammen, die Erfahrung mit künstlerischen Initiativen und Netzwerken der Solidarität in Österreich, Polen, Schweiz und Deutschland haben. Ziel ist es, das gegenseitige Lernen und die Vernetzung zwischen den unterschiedlichen Initiativen, Räumen und Akteuer:innen zu fördern und unterstützende kulturpolitische Maßnahmen zu diskutieren und anzuregen.
